We think that the best Chromebooks are those that are very cheap and do a good job of using the Chrome operating system.

The HP Chromebook 14 fits the bill because it is small, has a bright blue finish, and has a 14-inch HD screen.

Even though the battery life isn’t as good as some of the other options on our list, the Chromebook 14 is worth a serious look because of how it looks and how much it costs.

Chromebook for Drawing Buying Guide

Is It a Good Option for an Artist to Use a Chromebook That Comes With a Stylus?

If you had asked me a few years ago if a Chromebook was good for drawing, painting, or other creative work – back when Chromebooks with Chrome OS were still new and the platform was relatively unsettled – I would have said no, it’s better to stick with something already established and proven like Windows or, of course, Apple OS.

Back then, Chromebooks with Chrome OS were still relatively new, and the platform was relatively unsettling.

Even as recently as a few years ago, before the USI protocol was formed, I would have continued to answer in the negative due to the fact that computers just are unable to provide a strong, high-quality creative experience, which would severely limit both your expressive range and your technique.

However, presently a number of different elements are coming into play, including the following:

  • Compatibility with the Android operating system and software from the Google Play store
  • The effort was made by Google to make professional art tools such as Adobe and Corel available for use on Chrome OS.
  • The growing availability of art apps that are either good or even exceptional, which can be accessed online
  • USI (universal stylus initiative)
  • Enhanced compatibility with artist tablets that plug into the computer

The Capabilities and Limitations of Chrome OS
When it comes to the operating system (OS) on Chromebooks, there is sometimes a great deal of misinformation, and we wanted to try to “clear the fog,” so to speak, so that you are aware of exactly what the Chrome OS can and cannot accomplish.

Because Android is the predominant operating system for mobile devices, a Chromebook might be considered an Android computer.

Access to Android applications can bring an additional level of productivity to a Chromebook, despite the fact that using a Chromebook is a very user-friendly experience in and of itself.

Having access to apps such as Spotify, Snapchat, Instagram, and a great number of other applications can make things easier, such as marketing your business on Instagram.

In the past, designers using Chromebooks were unable to access the Adobe Creative Cloud.

However, that situation has lately improved, as Adobe has developed applications for Chromebooks, which allow users to continue to make use of their various products.

Photoshop Mix, Photoshop Sketch, Comp CC, Lightroom Mobile, Illustrator Draw, and Creative Cloud Mobile are the names of the apps that fall within this category.

A list of Adobe software can be found at this link.

What exactly is USI, and why is it so important to Artists for drawing?

The Universal Stylus Initiative (USI) is a standard that was developed to ensure that different brands and types of pens that are intended to be used on touchscreens work universally and that they offer a basic level of performance and functionality. This basic level of performance and functionality includes 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt recognition. USI is an acronym for the Universal Stylus Initiative.

Although this is a very new standard, it appears to have already been well established, and it appears that all computer and pen manufacturers will eventually conform to the criteria set forth by the USI.

However, as of right now, only a very limited number of pens have this capability, and only a very limited number of Chromebooks are compatible with USI pens.

If you do not have USI compatibility, however, you will not have pressure sensitivity or tilt detection, and as a result, you will lose a significant amount of the expressivity and flow of your performance.

It’s true that you can accomplish a lot of this with the help of your software, but in the end, you’ll find that it’s a very, very different experience from doing it naturally, with hand motions and movements, such as when you’re drawing or painting with actual materials.

In conclusion, the USI stylus is beneficial, and there is no evidence to suggest that it is harmful.
