How to be Creative In art- 9 Tested & proven Techniques

The majority of us conceptualise creativity as the capacity to produce visually arresting works of art, literary works that become bestsellers, architecturally spectacular structures, or emotionally stirring pieces of music.

And the idea that one is either creative by nature or not at all.

But these are just urban legends.

It is not necessary to have innate skill in order to be creative because natural talent is not the primary factor that contributes to creativity.

The majority of people that are creative will acknowledge that their creativity is only 10% talent and 90% hard effort, which consists of practising and honing their talents.

A step farther was taken by Albert Einstein when he stated, “Genius is 1% talent and 99% percent hard work.”

Everyone, regardless of their age or background, is capable of developing their creative potential; it is not a natural talent.

What is Creativity?

How is it possible for an everyday person to develop their creative side?

The appearance or way of life of a new age, hipster, or beatnik is irrelevant to creativity; in order to be creative, you do not need to adopt a new identity or even become skilled in a fine craft.

Everyone possesses some degree of creative ability, from the dentist who can create a flawless new smile to the house movers who know exactly where to place furniture to make a room look lovely.

Creativity is ingrained in all of us.

Simply expressing oneself through one’s creations is the essence of creativity.

To be creative, all that is required of you is to be creative.

It may be a work of exquisite art, but it could also be something that entertains people, something that simplifies life, something that makes life better or more fascinating, or anything else.

It might be the production of material that outlines novel approaches to carrying out activities or methods of thinking about issues.

Make as much use of your hands as you possibly can.

In today’s fast-paced environment, we don’t spend much time using our hands.

There are now washing machines , which take away the slippery, soapy experience of washing cloths; E pens and keyboards, which have replaced the familiar scratch of pencil on paper; and  we have electric toothbrushes and what not!, which mean that some people don’t even have to move their wrists in order to brush their teeth & wash their dishes.

Are you familiar with the concept of bodily memory?

It’s the phenomenon where you’re driving and all of a sudden you turn towards your house without even thinking about it, or how you can be lost in thought in the middle of doing something routine yet still do it perfectly without thinking about it.

When you use your hands to achieve something, it also has an effect on another part of your brain.

It has been demonstrated that the act of writing words down on paper using a pen or pencil tricks your brain into believing that you have truly sent those words verbally to another individual.

This mental manoeuvre is used by therapists to assist patients in coping with the effects of their difficult relationships with others by having them write letters that they do not intend to send.

The mind experiences the identical sense of relief that it would have if the words had been genuinely conveyed to the other individual.

If you use your hands to do activities that are either familiar or unfamiliar to you, you can take advantage of two peculiarities of the mind that can help you become more creative.

Do something a little bit different every time you doodle or write in your journal to keep things interesting. You are not only reinforcing the body memories you currently possess but also building new ones as you practise them.

If you want to communicate your inner ideas and feelings, try doodling, writing, or any other activity that requires the use of your hands.

You don’t have to do something for anyone else; you may do it just for yourself, but you’ll be astonished at how much satisfaction you’ll derive from seeing your ideas materialise in the real world when you do it.

Playing creatively with your hands can take many forms, including digging in the soil, finger painting, and even the way you wash your automobile.

All of these can be considered creative outlets.

Simple is best. So, Keep It Simple

The complexity of your ideas has the potential to undermine their fundamental core.

Imagine that a florist is about to prepare a bouquet of roses for you to enjoy. Imagine for a moment that she utilises twelve distinct hues of rose and then arranges them in a vase that features a complex geometric design comprised of a variety of colours.

It’s way too much.

Do not overthink the idea; instead, have faith that it will come together on its own with your assistance.

Having more experiences will motivate you to take on life and enjoy it to the fullest extent possible. These ten actions will not only enrich what you produce, but they will also help you construct a life that reverberates with vigour and inspiration. This is because they will improve your creative process.

Start Doodling

Doodles are “Random drawings produced with No concentration on it,” thus it’s a good idea to practise drawing them.

Doodling: unleashing your unconscious creativity

Doodlers include some of the most creative and imaginative personalities in history, such as Steve Jobs, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Federico Fellini.

Numerous individuals, particularly artists, rely on doodling to facilitate the creative process.

Others view doodling as merely a peaceful or enjoyable activity that fosters creative ideas.Taking a piece of paper and drawing whatever comes to mind while listening to music or a podcast is a simple technique to increase your creativity.Doodling is one of the simplest and most straightforward ways to stimulate creativity.

The psychology and personality of the doodler can be gleaned from historical doodles, particularly those produced by artists. This is because historical doodles provide a window into the doodler’s work.

The examination of 9,000 doodles contributed by members of the public constituted the most exhaustive look into the practise of doodling.

When people doodle, their brains have the opportunity to solve problems or come up with unique ideas in a subconscious manner

Obviously, the act of creating art has a big positive effect on one’s creative potential as well.

Making art is a great way to increase your concentration and critical thinking skills, as well as to relieve stress and help you relax.

You may believe that making art entails activities such as painting, drawing, or sculpting; nevertheless, you do not need to produce works of fine art in order to enjoy the benefits of creating.
Adult Coloring, knitting, quilting, photography, woodworking, gardening, and even do-it-yourself house repair are examples of hobbies that fall into this category.

You are going to need to use and stretch your imagination in order to participate in any of these activities.

You simply require a sketch that is blank for colouring and a set of coloured pencils, pens, or markers to get started.

You can print free pictures from websites such as Super Coloring or purchase colouring books that cover a wide variety of topics.

When working on works of art or crafts, you shouldn’t get too caught up in worrying about how well they turned out.

Always keep in mind that the ultimate result is not as essential as the process that goes into developing anything.

When you day-dream, your mind wanders freely without boundaries.

Even if you can’t alter the way things are in the real world, your imagination is free to take you anywhere you choose to go.

Daydreaming is associated with increased levels of creativity and the ability to solve problems, according to research. research implies that we should review how we think about daydreaming, and in particular, what we day-dream about. Although daydreaming may not be the rapid creativity hack that we wish for, this research also says that we should reevaluate what we day-dream about. In Their study of students, found that the majority of daydreams did not have a correlation with creative thinking. However, there were two categories of daydreams that were consistently connected with creative thinking.
In the laboratory, they discovered that those who admitted to having a larger propensity for significant or fantastical daydreams were also the ones who created the most colourful and imaginative short stories

Daydreaming has been shown to be productive of fresh ideas, as you may already be aware.

The vast majority of us have, at some point or another, had an excellent new concept while out on a stroll or when we were in the shower.

A professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School named Srini Pillay, MD, came up with the term “positive constructive daydreaming” (PCD) to describe an ideal type of daydreaming. PCD is an acronym for “positive constructive daydreaming.”

He describes the process as involving allowing the mind to wander while keeping it “on a leash.”

You don’t want to waste that time thinking about previous worries or harbouring old resentments towards other people.

To get the most out of your daydreams, Pillay suggests the following four-step procedure, which is as follows:

  • Schedule some time in each day specifically for daydreaming.
  • Eliminate as many external sensations and distractions as possible. (Closing your eyes may be of some assistance.)
  • Take some time to relax and do nothing, or occupy yourself with a low-key activity such as knitting or plucking weeds. Even routine work can be a source of original thought.
  •  Don’t evaluate your thoughts; simply let them come out as they may. There are occasions when poor ideas give rise to better ones.( Source)

Daydreaming has been shown to promote concentration, creativity, and self-awareness in its practitioners. Additionally, it might assist you in visualising and planning for the future.

  • Make sure you give yourself some downtime every day.
  • Focus your attention inside by shutting off your ability to perceive things around you. Close your eyes to get a speedy start.
  • Either engage in a low-key activity or don’t do anything at all.
  • Be aware that your brain has a propensity to resist, and train yourself to use positive self-talk to urge it to relax.
  • Put your feet up, close your eyes, and day-dream your way to achievement.

Play Video Games, Yes You Heard it right!

Researchers from Michigan State University discovered a correlation between playing video games and having a higher level of creative thinking.

When they analysed over 500 pre-teens, they discovered that the children who played video games more often were also more creative when drawing drawings and writing stories. This was the conclusion reached after conducting an investigation.

So, how exactly can video games encourage creative thinking?

The following are some of the consequences that playing video games can have, as stated in the academic research book titled Video Games And Creativity:

  • improved ability to concentrate
  • improved capacity for neural processing as well as processing speed
  • stronger problem-solving skills better social skills
  • changes in the brain that eventually lead to changes in behaviour
  • increased levels of motivation
  • increased spatial skills
  • enhanced overall performance
  • improved mood, increased imagination, and an increased sense of one’s own worth
